MORE TURNTABLE EXPERIMENTS from A DEMON SHEEN

inspired by the percussive turntable possibilities displayed by
CLINTON GREEN and ERNIE ALTHOFF
and a huge fan of the creative physical-glitch techniques of
CHRISTIAN MARCLAY and OTOMO YOSHIHIDE
Victoria's very own A DMN SHEEN
created his FREETABLES project.

the newest volume, FREETABLES 4, incorporates the same bells and clackers and small drums and christmas decorations and string drums and shakers and percussive elements as the first 3 volumes, as well as the same approaches to fractured vinyl forced-grooves and skips.

but where FREETABLES 4 differs from the first three volumes is in the additional use of 4-STRINGED MONOTONAL ACOUSTIC GUITAR, leaned onto the spinning vinyl to create haunting hurdy-gurdy-like drones, or placed nearby the turntable so that wildly-swinging beaters or bells randomly strike the strings, creating odd chaotic fluxes of abstracted melody and guitar-string timbre.

with a poorly-treated stylus creating increasingly-distorted turntable fragments, incidental field-recordings picked up by the mic, and a clattering smattering of small percussions, these pieces are for fans of acoustic randomness, algorithmic drones, untreated cluster-musik, and/or cultural re-use.

Pterygium - Concealing The Past

Out now on Tesco Organisation

Pterygium is another discovery that was brought to a bigger audience via "Projekt Neue Ordnung II" 4LP Box. Like "DEATHPANEL" the australian outfit did surprise with his outstanding atmospheric droned textured power electronics. Concealing The Past, Pterygium’s first CD and second full length album compiles a assemblage of studio recordings throughout 2017 and 2018. From jarring analogue live sessions to melancholic, nonchalant atmospheres, each piece disconnects from the next, self containing singularity ideas that present as individual representations of every day chaos and detachment. Continuing on from his debut album “Grip”, Concealing the Past explores greater textural depths, seeking a more elaborate, expansive sound palate. This culminates in adroit switches between cold and bleak to manic and uncompromising. Underlying drones mould layers together leaving melodies to punctuate the structural development of each work. Freestyle, improvised power electronic workouts serve to seperate the somber uncertainties. Simply put, Concealing The Past is 9 episodes of modern Sturm und Drang detailing rationalised toil authenticated by modern social tendencies.

New items released /distributed by Shame File Music

Clinton Green “Thylacine” CD/digital - These four tracks were created and recorded at various locations in Cradle Mountain National Park and Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery (Tasmania), during my residency there in October 2017. The two outdoor tracks attempt to bring wildlife and environmental sound to the fore, with my own sound in a supporting role. The tracks recorded inside the gallery focus on acoustic turntable preparations, with the sound of the extinct fauna calling at intervals from a nearby exhibit. Limited edition of 100 copies.

Clinton Green “If Good Fortune Follows A Fellow” cassette/digital - Two different sides of recent turntable manipulation/output. Side A uses audio signal output noise from a misplaying “How To Be A Ventriliquist” LP found in Auckland, agitated by layers of cardboard and a suspended fingerdrum. Side B changes stride to a meditative percussive work generated by four turntables arranged with overlapping acoustic preparations. The cassette is a limited edition of 25 numbered copies, each individually packed with a Merz assemblage/lucky dip of objects/detrius collected/constructed by myself and Chemical Imbalance label overlord, Mitch Soden (includes download code). Digital version available here https://chemical-imbalance.bandcamp.com/album/clinton-green-if-good-fortune-follows-a-fellow

Clinton Green & Ernie Althoff "Blindfold test" CD/digital - "I think I know how these four machines sound", Clinton said of the images of Ernie's recently constructed kinetic sonic machines.

"Ok, then build four pairs for these, send me the images and the sound files, and I'll mix them down to four duet tracks", Ernie replied. These became Part 1 of 'Blindfold test'; the name stuck from the start.

Part 2 eventuated when the duo were asked to perform at 'Autumnal sounds', a house event in Bayswater North. Three different and separate turntable pieces were devised by each player. These were performed back-to-back for added theatrical effect, with photos and videos only later revealing the processes. A mobile phone alarm ended each section.

Limited edition of 100 copies. Digital version available here https://shamefilemusic.bandcamp.com/album/blindfold-test

Jessica L. Wilkinson & Simon Charles "Marionette: a biography of Miss Marion Davies" CD - Wilkinson reads from her 2012 book on Marion Davies, the actress perhaps best known for her 30-year affair with media mogul William Randolph Hearst. The text draws attention to the gaps and inconsistencies in Davies’ story, whilst playfully attempting to locate the voice of a woman whose story can never be fully told. Wilkinson’s reading is accompanied by a collage of instrumental and electro-acoustic performance composed by Charles, and performed by an all-star quartet of Jenny Barnes (voice), Phoebe Green (viola/viola d’amore), Andrew Butler (piano/harmonium) and Michael McNab (percussion). Like most of Charles’ compositions, the music is beautifully fragile and fragmented, an intriguing setting for this reconstruction of character. CD comes in a 6-panel digipack with 4 page booklet, with download code.

Noise Machines "Scanners Deprived Internal Harmonics" CDR - One-off group improvisation project experimenting with automated sound output featuring members of Club Sound Witches, Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, and Smoking Ruins. Limited edition of 30 copies.

Various Artists "Bad Taste, Vol 2: another collection of sounds from the NZ underground" cassette C100 choker full of the weird, wonderful and strange of New Zealand Underground music, featuring Peter Wright, Duckling Monster, The Strange Girls, Axemen and many more. Ltd edition of 70 tapes, with full colour 3-panel jcard and download code.

Club Sound Witches "bdtd155" CDR - Lo fi industrial synth grinds to a near half before revving up again. Perhaps a voice warbles deep back in the mix? Half-dead-battery-power-electronics.
Club Sound Witches "CSW (bdtd165)"CDR - Picture the aftermath of a dance party. A deserted dance floor, sticky with spilt drinks and vomit. Musical automata whirr occasionally to life and emit random beats. A figure is curled up in the corner, rocking back and forth, murmuring torch songs into a mic. A stunning, unique album.
Club Sound Witches "bdtd172"CDR - A relatively more maximalist, industrial approach by CSW, with a denser array of sound present, but still ultimately broken and creating an impression of technology breaking down until it becomes almost organic.
Club Sound Witches "bdtd185" CDR - Vocals feature more prominently on this album. Well relatively speaking; often they are nothing more than a murmur amongst the semi-erratic slow beats and damaged synth whirrings. A collection of serenades for a post-technology world.
Club Sound Witches "bdtd208" CDR - Nearly-regular beats? Barely anything there, though. The sonic artefacts – reverb, bottom-end distortion – become just as important. Maybe a voice deep in the mix, or is it just the wind? Nothing is ever clear with CSW, but they are never more compelling than here.
Club Sound Witches "bdtd227" cassette - Ultra minimal not-quite-right beats, pulses and whirring malfunctions on the A side. Slow percussive wind-down-running-out-of-batteries jam on the B-side. From 2016, issued on upcycled cassette.

Dream Mirror - II

‘Thresholds’ is a radio-phonic piece composed in response to an invitation by FBi show ‘Ears Have Ears” to write & present a new soundtrack. They aired it on 7th June 2018. ‘Thresholds’ explores the idea of sound acting as a passageway or portal to newfound perspectives. Featuring 4 distinct parts, the piece shifts through different sonic and physical landscapes (waterways, city spaces, places of transit and change) to create a picture of Australia's ominous beauty, isolation and political complacency. Thresholds dives into the space of movement, from old visions of what we hold true to the freeing Unknown. We go through the tunnel, and the point is not necessarily where we land, but that we choose to enter.

‘Compulsive’ is an excerpt from a live performance by Dream Mirror on 2nd June 2018 at Stev Spectre’s Compulsion gig.

Three videos of kinetic sound installations by Ernie Althoff

Exhibited in July 2018 at The Substation, Newport, the work features eight battery powered machines all utilising wood as their sound source. The machines are placed in a large floor drawing of sticks, leaves and photographs.

Aleatory Pentaphonics over 5-part Canon  https://youtu.be/uUexjktaUXA

Exhibited in May 2006 at Sydney's Artspace Gallery as part of the MISTRAL exhibition, the work is made of the two machines referred to in the title. Polystyrene cups serve as primitive amplifiers and filters on both machines. The canon is sounded by five 'tone-arms' sliding along the rim of a rotating found object. A long-lost video, rediscovered after 12 years.

D's Guest Appearance  https://youtu.be/2DuYC7-N3Co

Exhibited in November 2006 at a historic building in Coolamon, NSW for the Wagga Unsound Festival. Three machines make up a sporadic texture of short, sharp sound events from metals and wood, overlaying a constant wavering base-texture provided by three machines from the "Declivities" installation of 2003. Another long-lost video.

New releases from Frustration Jazz label!

Sage Pbbbt & Erin K Taylor MPavilion

A beautiful, atmospheric live recording of an improvised set performed at Melbourne’s outdoor MPavilion venue in February 2018. Sage Pbbbt, extra-normal vocalist extraordinaire, had only just moved over from Perth and this collaboration with ridiculously talented Victorian percussionist, electro-acoustic musician and sound artist Erin K Taylor was the first time the two had met. The pair allow for plenty of space as they interact with each other and the environmental sounds (birdsong in particular) that weave a consistent thread through the recording. Transformative and transportive are the operative words here, along with ideas of ritual performance that are important to both their solo practices...

Out Now @:

David Palliser Soot

David Palliser’s second release on Frustration Jazz begins with three courses of freely improvised alto sax abstraction, shadowed by harmony, followed by a fourth extended piece that adds other instrumentation and spontaneous looping to the mix. The appropriately titled opening track Hinges comes out swinging in unconventional ways, non-idiomatic but hinting at some formative free jazz listening experiences... The longer track Geology Forever, recorded live in 2017 at the belated launch of his Lame & Free album (also on Frustration Jazz), begins with the solo sax once more but it’s not long before David’s inspired use of the loop pedal comes into play along with clarinet, percussion, ukulele and even vocals, creating shifting layers of sound with which he interacts as if they’re other players in the space... All of it flows naturally together, extending his music into the realm of idiosyncratic, inventive free folk.

Also, released mid-year:

Bad Magic Bad Magic II

A set of mostly miniature instrumentals for lo-fi synth and occasional guitar, following on from Bad Magic's self-titled debut released on Frustration Jazz late in 2016. Eleven tracks, recorded in 2017, repeating melodies that are sometimes sparingly layered with other elements and often quite beautiful in their own uncanny way... Not songs in a conventional sense but there is a kind of abstract narrative sense at play I think... Throughout there are touches of folk, classical, German kosmische, electronic, film and video game music all blended into something that still manages to be very minimalistic – simple in the best possible way. It sounds, to these ears at least, both uniquely personal and gently enchanting, as if it’s of this world but at the same time otherworldly.

HARAAM All Four Horizons

Harsh-ambient walls of noise and a fictional(?) narrative about niche-market capitalism taken to an (il)logical extreme in which the target consumer is the anti-capitalist extremist. Welcome to the world of HARAAM, one where opposites don’t just attract but depend on one another for their continued existence... All Four Horizons begins in nightmare territory, feeling a bit like plunging into the middle of a violent, surging ocean storm. The only reprieve from that intensity comes with the title track, a moodier distant-sounding piece where a mechanical rhythm floats through an indeterminate mist... For all the severity there’s also a warmth to these sounds... and taken as a whole the album has a psychedelic quality that fans of Yellow Swans (or even Haare) might appreciate. Nekrasov, Lucas Darklord and Vomir have all occupied HARAAM’s ears too I’m told....
