GNAUMGN - domestic field recordings / art around the house

THITHERPALE

"gnaumgn's bajillionth game changing release."
- DFFDL

thither: to or toward that place
pale: an area within determined bounds or subject to a particular jurisdiction

GNAUMGN have been talking for some time about doing a project based on the duo's respective domestic spaces, located over 130m apart in Cape Paterson and Melbourne. The idea was to produce a one-take recording of our respective home environments and combine them, beginning and ending with more traditional GNAUMGN magic. Thitherpale is the result of a game of making-strange what is present and familiar and which, therefore, might come to be taken for granted. It stems from an appreciation of the sonic characteristics of the things we use on a day-to-day basis but which do not typically make a sound or, if they do, makes sounds that might well be heard but not listened to.

A Dmn Shn's contribution begins with drumming before moving outside, then fridge hums and polystyrene bangs and scrapings in a storeroom, up stairs amid chattering birds, table leg clangs in the lounge room, more banging and clanging and the sounds of drumsticks, apparently in hand the entire time, heard once more as they are rolled across the floor. The audio moves into the kitchen (bowls and exhaust fans), the bedroom (wooden bed slats, venetian blinds and the pages of books), the toilet (flushing and refilling), the bathroom (white-goods and shower-head), before returning to the studio with a GNAUMGN-eriffic drum solo.

This long-form, perambulatory field recording was combined with audio captured by D. Prescott-Steed in his own domestic habitat, comprising a fidget spinner, gong, bells, fish tank pump humming as it hums against an upright heater and many other objects, the sound a room makes when you jump up and down hard enough to cause the windows to rattle. DPS also took a quasi-boot-camp approach to listening, for a time dragging himself around the house and across the floor in order to access the sounds heard when underneath the bed, chairs, a table, and so on. It was an attempt to go against the natural altitude of listening that comes from the genetically pre-determined height of a human body.

Sounds waves enter our ear canals and are detected by our brains. By the time we hear a sound it is already inside us, initiating imagination. Thitherpale is about imaginative listening, and reflects GNAUMGN's long-standing curiosity in how we creatively navigate our built environments. Rubbing against a tradition that art only happens when we're "going out", Thitherpale is an album that unpacks the listening pleasure of domestic space, acknowledging a shared recognition of the importance of home, of washing up, of having a clean carpet and of the other living creatures who are forced to live amongst all our piles of stuff - and the art that occurs when we just listen to where we already are.

MERGE INTO STRIPES - TO MEASURE EVIDENCE OF THEIR EXISTENCE

to measure evidence of their existence

Crashing the Melbourne experimental scene in 1993 with their Hawkwind-meets-Ministry-meets-MrBungle project gLOBALmINDfUCK, Bendy and A Demon Sheen are now considered reclusive weird-music veterans.  Their duo together, Merge Into Stripes, has been making extremely strange improvisations since 2000, and yet they've only played live a handful of times, and released only a handful of albums.  So rare is their output that it is an average of 5 years between albums.  But, like Halley's Comet, the long and silent wait is usually worth it...

In the nigh-on-twenty-years that the project has been making sounds, Merge Into Stripes has used reel-to-reel-players, live birds, raw sine tones, manipulated CDs, guitars, basses, DVDs, answering machine messages, small sampling keyboards, and the live human voice as source materials for their warped and fractured sound experiments.   On this new release, they add iPhone zombie games, harmonicas, recordings of drums, synthesised drum apps, recordings of birds, and whistling, among other things.  In the grand tradition of non-goal-oriented musical exploration, none of the pieces were entered into with any ideas, intentions, or desire, but were crafted entirely spontaneously, with A Demon Sheen creating the input, and Bendy creating the output.

Eschewing proper names for the results of their metamagical electromancy, Merge Into Stripes's first ever recording was named "A1".  This naming tradition has continued, with this latest album featuring pieces from the session named "X" and the session named "Z".  Having reached the end of the traditional English Alphabet, does this mean the end for Merge Into Stripes?  Or is this merely the sign that they have reached a new beginning?  I guess we'll find out in another 5 years...

Available on Band Camp, the double-disc release comes with individual artworks for every track, created by Bendy and A Demon Sheen.  The Band Camp Portal also includes their previous albums, "To Maintain Diversity in a Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimizer", "To Mesmerise Its Prey Before Striking", and "To Communicate With Others of Its Species", as well as 4 live recordings, which may indeed be the only 4 times the band has ever played live.

Download or stream all of these Merge Into Stripes releases completely free, or donate to the band if you feel it is worthy.  The releases are here, for ease of access:

long-form ambient/experimental releases coming up: Andy Wear

Andy Wear has been making noise for the best part of 30 years; as a post-punk art-school dropout in Brisbane in the 80s and 90s, as a avant-garde deconstructivist in Hobart in the 00s, and now, settling in Melbourne as a sculptor of ambient sound in long-form drones, loops and hums.

His latest release, a two-part, 50 minute study titled Hynorv/Bologna is available on Soundcloud, and is soon to be released on limited edition vinyl.

GNAUMGN release DISC TWO of the TWO TOWERS DIPTYCH

MEJIMINORASI

it's not a word you use often.

yet.

but when you listen to GNAUMGN's new album, you will.

oh yes.

YOU WILL.

disc two of the Two Towers Diptych.

The Two Towers rise from the scorched earth like gravestones.   Although the blasted burning lands around them have been pounded to smouldering dust, the Towers stand.  In the context of such abused flatness, each Tower seems almost infinitely tall, surreal, unreal, piercing the sky with their billboards and antennae.  Scaffolding meets slick metal and bird-bone concrete.  Most of the lights still flash, the neon that has not been destroyed still leers and beckons.  The sale is for a limited time only.

The Two Towers stand, exhausted, but upright, two kings at the end of a game of chess, stalemate.  Neither side has won – and now, neither side can win.  The futility of price war.  Which side are you on?  Now, more than ever, it doesn’t matter.  The war can never end, can never be won, and generations of loyal customers chalk up points on their rewards cards for nothing.  Redeem the vouchers of war.  Frequent fighter points accumulate, passed down as heirlooms to children born to hate.

There is nothing but carparks now, in the surrounding lands – carparks as far as the eye can see.  The Two Towers face each other, stare each other down, powerful and powerless, competitors to the hearts and minds of their clients.  The war itself is the only real winner.  A burnt dollar is no dollar at all.

GNAUMGN IS DAVID PRESCOTT-STEED (realms / powered by steam)
AND A DEMON SHEEN (intrinsic light / functional zero)

Brand-loyalty or no loyalty at all.  The ultimate cost.
