JON WATTS
Melbourne based producer, DJ and musician. Over the last decade Jon has traversed a number of styles as a live performer, including no-input mixing, free improvisation, and hardware techno experiments. KALINDA VARY
Kalinda ’s practice explores ideas of emotionality, vulnerability and power, humour and humiliation, constraints of language and the problems with representations of identity. Her recent work concentrates on queer concerns of the body, performance within social structures and imposed cultural identities.

TARAB
explores re-contextualised collected sounds and tactile gestures formed into dynamic, psycho-geographical compositions inspired by discarded things, found things, crawling around in the dirt, junk, the ground, rocks, dust, wind, walking aimlessly, scratchy things, decay and most if not all the things he hears and sees. More than simply documenting a given site, tarab is interested in a direct engagement with our surrounds, teasing out half narratives, visceral sensation, false leads and heightened awareness.

New Low-key Loki-drones from GRIST...

entheogenic microloop punk-ambient

Long-time Melbourne experimental audiomancer A DEMON SHEEN's blackened mono layer-core project GRIST has just released another collection of entheogenic microloop punk-ambient shaman-jams, MONADS, released through underground Britain's SOMBRE SONIKS label.  Tiny found-sound loops coalesce, grain by grain, into heavy conglomoliths of disturbient mind-expansion, as the micronal found-sound schippettes weave together in moire-like webs of density and grace.

For the official press release, A DEMON SHEEN took the descriptions of other GRIST releases, and the Wikipedia entry for Leibniz's Monads, and ran it all through an online cut-up machine.  The resulting nonsense/magickal incantation is presented here in its entirety:

Monad is said minimalism. A universe of his system cognitive a focus on by perception and memory peel back of field potentiality and actuality.

MIUC 210818 x Eavesdropping: Justice as Improvisation

“Law and jazz thus coalesce in the irresolution of the improvised act…” – Sara Ramshaw

https://eavesdropping.exposed/events/make-it-up-club-justice-as-improvisation

What has law got to do with improvisation? What would it mean to improvise with or in law? What if improvisation was essential to law’s very operation? What are the laws of improv?

As part of Eavesdropping, Liquid Architecture and Melbourne Law School are taking over Make it Up Club for a night of improvisations in the key of justice.

Legal scholar Sara Ramshaw will recount the famous 1997 encounter between musician Ornette Coleman and philosopher Jacques Derrida and what this meeting might have to say about ideas of law and justice.

Following this, Ramshaw will lead performances of Hydra, an experiment in legal advocacy adapted from John Zorn’s classic 1984 improvised musical game piece Cobra. Hydra is at once about oral agility and deep listening. It is concerned with rules more than rhythms and principles more than pitches, but always the necessity of judgment to performance, no matter the context.

This event will also feature short performances by members of the ALL EARS Eavesdropping reading group including Bruce Mowson, Ceri Hann, Debris Facility, Bryan Phillips, Klare Lanson, Thomas Keys, Georgina Criddle and Norie Neumark.

SARA RAMSHAW is an Associate Professor at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law with a special interest in improvisation. Her monograph, Justice as Improvisation: The Law of the Extempore (Routledge 2013) examined the legal regulation of jazz musicians in New York City (1940−1967) through the lens of poststructural theory informed by feminism, critical race theory and critical improvisation studies.

Liquid Architecture is an Australian organisation for artists working with sound. LA investigates the sounds themselves, but also the ideas communicated about, and the meaning of, sound and listening.

Eavesdropping is a unique collaboration between Liquid Architecture, Melbourne Law School and the Ian Potter Museum of Art, comprising an exhibition, a public program, series of working groups and touring event which explores the politics of listening through work by leading artists, researchers, writers and activists from Australia and around the world.

NEW DICE AMBIENT FROM UNDEAD MAGIC USER

Encounters on The Journey

New RPG-core dice-ambient darkness from Australia's favourite undead magic user, Undead Magic User.  Although their previous three releases (And On That Terrible Throne, Handbook of Realms, and The Robe of Shadowlore) focused on layers of randomly-generated orchestral sounds moving in and out of synch and tonality, this new release focuses more on the cold dungeon-synth vibes of the very first album (Master of Dungeons) an album that was described by Resounding Footsteps as evoking "the most dreadful atmosphere ... giving the listener the feeling that the world they are in is vast beyond comparison but so dark at the same time that they can’t see two inches from their face").

However, although heavy in dungeon-synth vibes, Encounters on the Journey is not as staggeringly anti-life as the first release, instead exploring different textures, including regret (The Dark Halfling's Lament), anticipation (Preparing for the Great Journey), and the experience of being a crystal minotaur (Crystal Minotaur).

It's specifically EQd for gaming over, it's as free as you want it to be, and it's available here.

More praise from Resounding Footsteps:

"The listener travels down in the dark, but to what point and purpose? Do they succeed? Do they succumb to the madness and terror that dwells hungrily in the dark? If the track titles are any indication, I don’t think the listeners are meant to make it out alive in this one. It’s a depressing tale of glory seeking fools who rush into the abyss without realizing the abyss has been waiting for them. I love dark fantasy and that’s exactly what this tale is. No matter what the listener-protagonist tries to do, they fail. Death is not even an option down here (because of, you know, undead magic users). Soon enough all of us will falter from the path and end up lost and alone, surrounded by living shadows and monsters so terrible that the light itself hides from them. The music is very clear throughout the entire album: we are at the mercy of the dungeon."
