GNAUMGN release DISC ONE of the TWO TOWERS DIPTYCH

EZIMBILITUROJ

it's not a word you use often.

yet.

but when you listen to GNAUMGN's new album, you will.

oh yes.

YOU WILL.

disc one of the Two Towers Diptych.

The Two Towers rise from the scorched earth like gravestones.   Although the blasted burning lands around them have been pounded to smouldering dust, the Towers stand.  In the context of such abused flatness, each Tower seems almost infinitely tall, surreal, unreal, piercing the sky with their billboards and antennae.  Scaffolding meets slick metal and bird-bone concrete.  Most of the lights still flash, the neon that has not been destroyed still leers and beckons.  The sale is for a limited time only.

The Two Towers stand, exhausted, but upright, two kings at the end of a game of chess, stalemate.  Neither side has won – and now, neither side can win.  The futility of price war.  Which side are you on?  Now, more than ever, it doesn’t matter.  The war can never end, can never be won, and generations of loyal customers chalk up points on their rewards cards for nothing.  Redeem the vouchers of war.  Frequent fighter points accumulate, passed down as heirlooms to children born to hate.

There is nothing but carparks now, in the surrounding lands – carparks as far as the eye can see.  The Two Towers face each other, stare each other down, powerful and powerless, competitors to the hearts and minds of their clients.  The war itself is the only real winner.  A burnt dollar is no dollar at all.  Brand-loyalty or no loyalty at all.  The ultimate cost.

Your mother called

Tape launch party with a sunset school disco sound

Existential electronic trio, ‘Great Rack and an Empty Club Reverb', are releasing a tape and hosting a free launch party on Saturday 2 June with support DJ sets from Carla Ori (Biscotti) and audio visual installations from Jack Palmer (Bad Ambulance).

Not quite jazz, not quite stand up comedy, ‘Great Rack and an Empty Club Reverb' is an existential tryst between Maria Moles (Mondo Flockard, Jaala), Adam Halliwell (First Baboon Civilization, Mildlife) and Emily Bennett (Nyash! Afrobeat Collective, Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde).

The group has spent a year mixing and remixing a day of improvised sessions onto a mixtape that immediately thrusts the listener into a parallel universe drenched in shapeshifting vocals (Bennett), fervent drums and percussion (Moles) and maverick guitar, synth, flute and tape sounds (Halliwell).

The ‘rack’ in the group name refers to an outdated Korg A3 Multi Effects SIgnal Processor that modulates and distorts the voice.

“On the album we wanted to place the rack within the memory of a school disco, where one could move through the dance floor and process all the weird shit we experience throughout our lives,” said group member Emily Bennett.

The ‘Great Rack and an Empty Club Reverb' Tape Launch will be held at Siteworks at 33 Saxon Street in Brunswick at 4pm on Saturday 2 June. Entry is free.

The Arbour and The Orrery/The Fission-Fusion Whale

JAMES HULLICK: THE ARBOUR AND THE ORRERY

For this exhibition, new work from James Hullick’s machine installation practice will accompany TarraWarra Museum of Art’s major survey of the work of Edwin Tanner. The exhibition will feature two new installations by Hullick that are in dialogue with the works of Tanner: THE ARBOUR OF DOORS, a speaker cave made of recycled audiovisual materials that visitors can enter, and THE ORRERY OF HUMAN DESIRES, a mechanical model of rotating speakers and analogue synthesisers which will articulate orbits of human desire. The two works have been conceived of as ‘instruments’ for expanding audiovisual practice.

THE FISSION-FUSION WHALE

Part concert, part music theatre, part song cycle.

The Fission-Fusion Whale maps out a 21st-century fairy tale: three face-painted god-like interstellar explorers find one of their number swallowed within a galactic whale.
The work pivots on the vocal performances of Justine Anderson and Strange James, supported by the supernova-sonic terrains of renowned percussionist Peter Neville. An added audio-visual dimension informs the project through the Duckworth Hullick Duo’s implementation of Jonathan Duckworth’s Resonance Table — a touchscreen audiovisual instrument.

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre and JOLT

Wednesday 23 May 2018 6pm
Duration: 1 hour (no interval)
